The Kingdom of Karran is a major continental power located in the northeast of the world of Fãlherilh. Separated from the lands of Takkanor by the Seceres Strait, this kingdom is distinguished by its economic power and its organization of absolute rigor.
Geography and Territory
The Karranien territory is vast and marked by a great diversity of landscapes, although its identity is strongly linked to its vast desert expanses.
The Seceres Strait constitutes the vital border between Karran and the north of Takkanor. It is a strategic crossing point where trade between the three nations intersects.
Society and Social Order
Karran's society is governed by a social structure of absolute rigidity, inspired by an immutable caste system. Unlike the fluidity observed in the cities of Takkanor, an individual's destiny is practically sealed from birth.
Society is organized into specialized strata (artisans, warriors, peasants/cultivators...) under the authority of four major ruling families that act as the guardians of the kingdom's order.
- Nobility and Clergy: At the top of the pyramid, members of the four major families exercise quasi-divine power. They control trade routes and resources, dictating the law to a population that cannot deviate from its rank without risking social opprobrium.
- Cultural Isolation: The structure is so hermetic that mating between a Karranien subject and a foreigner (notably the inhabitants of Takkanor or Navaria) is considered a supreme humiliation and a defilement that breaks the purity of the lineage.
The Four Great Houses
Power is shared among four dominant lineages, each controlling a vital aspect of the kingdom:
- House Kaelith (The Lineage of Radiance): The spiritual pillar of the kingdom, they oversee rituals and ensure the "purity" of the castes. They have the power to declare a family "defiled," resulting in immediate social exclusion.
- House Draken (The Lineage of Iron): The warrior nobility charged with border protection and military management. They control strategic water points in the arid zones.
- House Solari (The Lineage of Dawn): Masters of logistics and intercontinental trade, they control caravan routes and dictate taxes on every commodity crossing the Seceres Strait.
- House Oryn (The Lineage of the Abyss): Masters of shadow, they oversee resource management and labor control, ensuring the material wealth of the kingdom.
Religion
Karran's religion, known as "The Way of the Lineages", does not rely on personal faith but on the cosmological necessity of maintaining the balance of the world.
The dogma is based on the idea that the universe is a perfect and fixed structure. Any attempt at social, biological, or political change is perceived as an offense to "The Architect" (or the Grand Seal), the abstract entity that traced the lines of the castes. For a Karranien, stability is the supreme value, and change is synonymous with chaos.
